The Department of Agricultural Economy Management (originally the Department of Agricultural and Forestry Economy Management) has a long history that can be traced to 1953 when the Agricultural Economics Major was founded. The Department is one of the few Agricultural Economics programs in the nation.

The Department has two teaching and research offices (Agricultural Economy Management, and Land Resource Management); one undergraduate programme (Agricultural and Forestry Economy Management); three academic master programs (Agricultural Economy Management, Forestry Economy Management, and Land Resource Management); one specialized master programme (Rural and Regional Development); two doctorate programs (Agricultural Economics (independently created under the first-level discipline “Applied Economics” with approval of the Ministry of Education), and Land Resource Management). In 2008, Agricultural Economics was rated as an excellent course of Hubei; in 2010, the undergraduate programme Agricultural and Forestry Economy Management was designated as a brand major of Hubei; in 1998, 2008 and 2013, the discipline Agricultural Economy Management was rated as a key higher education discipline of Hubei.

The Department has a very competent and well-structured faculty team composed of 19 teachers, among them eight are professors, six are associate professors, and eight are doctorate supervisors. Among all the teachers, one teacher is a receiver of State Council Government Special Allowance; one teacher is a Famous Higher Education Teacher of Hubei; one teacher is a member of the Agricultural Economy Management Teaching Guidance Committee, the Ministry of Education; one teacher is listed in the New Millennium Excellent Talent Support Plan of the Ministry of Education; two teachers are Millennium Discipline (Academic) Leaders of the Ministry of Finance; one teacher is a young or middle aged expert with special contributions to Hubei; three teachers are New Millennium High-end Talents of Hubei; one teacher is an ethnic affair excellent young or middle aged expert of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission; and one teacher is a Young Talent of Hubei.

The Department has established several research platforms including Hubei key social science research base – WTO and Hubei Development Research Centre, Urban and Rural Development Research Institute, Rural Development Research Institute, Rural Poverty Research Institute, Rural Land Research Institute, etc. The Department has powerful research capacity and unique features in the fields of theories and policies concerning agricultural economy, rural household economy and poverty, agricultural sustainable development, international trade of agricultural products, rural finance etc. In recent years, teachers of the Department have undertaken over 60 projects concerning agriculture and rural development, including the projects sponsored by national social science key procurement plan, the National Social Science Foundation of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, national soft science programme, social science programme of the Ministry of Education, national social non-profit foundation, and other national, provincial or ministry-level programs. Many researches have been published, including over 200 papers published on prestigious domestic or foreign journals, and 30 monographs and textbooks. Several researches have been awarded national, provincial or ministry-level prizes, including the Hubei development research first prize, higher education excellent social science research prize of the Ministry of Education, Hubei excellent social science research prize, Hubei science and technology advancement prize and other 25 provincial or ministry-level prizes. Since 1990s, the Department has established communication and cooperation with overseas universities or research institutes such as Fukushima University, University of Canterbury, Institute of Development Studies (IDS), International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Asian Development Bank (ADB), etc. The Department has a very favourable reputation in the academic world.
